Sainz wint Dakar voor derde keer, Al-Attiyah pakt etappewinst

Carlos Sainz mag zich vanaf vandaag drievoudig Dakar-winnaar noemen. De vader van Formule 1-coureur Carlos Sainz jr. had aan een zesde plaats in de laatste etappe voldoende om de eindzege veilig te stellen.

De twaalfde en laatste etappe van Dakar 2020 ging van Haradh naar Qiddiya en de etappe bevatte een klassementsproef van een kleine 170 kilometer. Sainz ving de etappe aan met een comfortabele voorsprong van tien minuten op Al-Attiyah en Stephane Peterhansel en in de laatste rit zou de eindzege van de Spanjaard eigenlijk niet meer in gevaar komen.

Al-Attiyah was weliswaar de snelste tijdens de twaalfde etappe, maar hij pakte niet genoeg tijd terug op Sainz om een gevaar te vormen in het algemeen klassement. Sainz werd zesde op bijna 4 minuten van de Qatarees, maar hield in de eindstand uiteindelijk ruim zes minuten marge over. Sainz pakte daarmee zijn derde Dakar-zege, nadat hij ook in 2010 en 2018 de sterkste was.

In de laatste etappe was Al-Attiyah dus de sterkste, op anderhalve minuut gevolgd door thuisrijder Yasir Seaidan. Orlando Terranova legde beslag op de derde positie, voor Fernando Alonso en Peterhansel. Allen gaven zij net iets meer dan drie minuten toe op dagwinnaar Al-Attiyah. Bernhard ten Brinke is op de achtste positie de beste Nederlander van de dag.

In het algemeen klassement legde Peterhansel achter Sainz en Al-Attiyah beslag op de derde plaats. Hij gaf tien minuten toe op teamgenoot Sainz. Yazeed Al Rajhi pakte een knappe vierde plaats in de Overdrive Toyota, gevolgd door de fabrieks-Toyota van Giniel de Villiers. Bernhard ten Brinke sluit Dakar 2020 af op de zevende positie, op 1 uur en 18 minuten van de winnaar.
