Kans op goede klassering nu al verkeken voor Erik van Loon

Erik van Loon en Sébastien Delaunay begonnen sterk aan de eerste etappe. Met tussentijden in de top tien leken zij op weg naar een goed resultaat. Tot zij in het stof van een motorrijder terecht kwamen. In het stof raakten zij twee grote stenen op hoge snelheid en dat zorgde voor veel schade aan de Toyota Hilux. Nadat zij hulp hadden gekregen van de T5-truck, konden zij verder. De finish is bereikt, maar het tijdverlies is enorm.

"Dit is erg frustrerend", zegt Van Loon. "De Dakar duurt twaalf dagen, we begonnen goed en deden niets geks. Door het stof raken we twee stenen en is praktisch de gehele rechtervoorkant kapot. Gelukkig lukt het om de auto weer rijdend te krijgen, met de hulp van de mannen in de T5-truck. Zonder Dave, Bob en Rob was het niet gelukt, dus bedankt mannen! Nu wordt het hard werken in het bivak om alles weer goed te krijgen voor de volgende etappe. De kans op een goede klassering is nu ver weg, maar aangezien dit pas de eerste dag was kan er nog veel gebeuren. We gaan ons best doen om goede dagresultaten te rijden."

De tweede etappe gaat van Bisha naar Wadi Ad-Dawasir. De stage is 457 kilometer lang met veel zand en de eerste duinen van deze Dakar Rally.

Erg jammer. Ook een dagsucces ligt niet in de lijn der verwachtingen. Misschien beetje bij beetje opklimmen naar top 20? Succes in ieder geval en veilig weer thuis.
