Van den Brink doet geen 'gekke dingen' in eerste etappe

Martin van den Brink is op koele en zakelijke wijze begonnen aan de Dakar Rally 2021. Het geduld en de gepaste voorzichtigheid werd beloond. De Nederlander eindigde in de truck van Mammoet Rallysport als achtste. "We hebben geen gekke dingen gedaan. Het was een zware proef met alleen maar stenen."

Mitchel van den Brink reed eveneens een stabiele en degelijke openingsrit. De 18-jarige debutant begon als 32ste aan de etappe naar Bisha. Mitchel van den Brink en zijn co-piloten Richard Mouw en Wilfred Schuurman bleven goed bij de les en eindigden uiteindelijk rond de dertigste plaats.

De equipe van Martin van den Brink, Wouter de Graaff en Daniel Kozlovsky verloor 21 minuten en 19 seconden op etappewinnaar Dmitry Sotnikov (Kamaz). De brigade van Mammoet Rallysport werd daarmee de beste Nederlandse equipe en was bovendien de eerste Renault-truck die de finish passeerde.

De verstandige aanpak van de lastige openingsrit over 277 kilometer wierp zijn vruchten af. Op het parcours met zand, stenen en grote keien verloren meerdere favorieten de nodige tijd. Zo zag titelverdediger Andrey Karginov zijn kansen op prolongatie van de winst al direct in rook opgaan. De Rus in de Kamaz verloor 1 uur en 31 minuten. Ook Kamaz-teamgenoot Mardeev (25.53) en MAZ-topper Aliaksei Vishneuski (+1 uur en 19 minuten) moesten veel tijd toegeven. Gert Huzink (+47.48), Pascal de Baar (+1.01.56) en Maurik van den Heuvel (+34.12) konden hun topposities van de openingsfase niet vasthouden.

Wennen

De mannen van Mammoet Rallysport bewezen dat er op het lastige parcours vooral veel tijd verloren kon worden. "We hebben met het hoofd gereden. Als je een grote steen raakt, ben je verder van huis."

Na een stabiele opening moest Martin van den Brink tussen km 135 en 177 een minuut of elf prijsgeven. "We hebben in dat gedeelte stil gestaan. De turbodruk viel weg. We moesten op zoek naar de oorzaak. Er bleek een relais te zijn doorgebrand. Dat was het enige probleem van deze dag."

Volgens Martin is het deze eerste dagen nog even aftasten. "Ik moet nog wel een beetje wennen aan de truck. We weten nu bijvoorbeeld dat we de vering nog goed moeten afstellen. Dat kwam in deze etappe duidelijk boven water. Het was mede daardoor een zware dag. We zijn blij dat we er zijn,’’ aldus de Nederlander direct na het beëindigen van de klassementsproef.
