Paul Spierings van Dakarteam Spierings heeft een positieve start gemaakt in de Dakar Rally van 2021. De eerste etappe liep van Jeddah naar Bisha met een special stage van 277 kilometer en een verbindingsroute van 345 kilometer.

"In de eerste 150 kilometer moest er op hoog niveau aan speedway en trial worden gedaan. Het speedwayen ging goed, maar in het 80 kilometer lange trial-gedeelte over de stenen had ik het moeilijk. Daarna ging we gelukkig terug het zand in en had ik het goede gevoel al snel weer gevonden", vertelt Spierings.

De Nederlander had zich voorgenomen om in deze etappe niet gelijk teveel risico's te nemen en reed gecontroleerd. "Ik werd ingehaald door een bekende freestyler maar twintig kilometer later kwam hij hard ten val. Ik ben gestopt en heb hem even geholpen omdat zijn airbag vestiging eraf lag. Dit koste mij ongeveer tien minuten en deze tijd zal ik van de organisatie nog terug krijgen. Ik heb verder lekker gereden en ben weer heel aan de finish gekomen."
