Van Loon tevreden ondanks anderhalf uur tijdverlies

Na ruim driehonderd kilometer in de tweede etappe moet Erik van Loon uitwijken waardoor de Toyota Hilux in een duinpan terecht komt. Van Loon en navigator Sébastien Delaunay wachten totdat iemand hen helpt om de weg te kunnen vervolgen. Van Loon verliest anderhalf uur, maar is wel tevreden met hoe het eerste deel van de proef is verlopen.

"We zijn er nog en kunnen dinsdag weer door", zegt Van Loon. "Het ging eigenlijk prima, we reden in de top vijftien en dat is in dit veld een goede prestatie. De Toyota was top! Na driehonderd kilometer moet ik uitwijken op een duin en daarbij mis ik een afstapje. Pure pech, want als je het geluk meehebt dan is er niks aan de hand. Uiteindelijk heeft Pascal de Baar ons weer rechtop gezet en konden wij verder rijden. In dat laatste stukje verliezen we bijna geen tijd, dus eigenlijk ben ik wel tevreden en hebben we een beetje meer geluk nodig."

De derde etappe is een loop rondom Wadi Ad-Dawasir van 403 kilometer op snelheid. De route is divers met zand, gravel en duinen.
