Loeb moet de strijd staken met technische problemen

Voor Sebastien Loeb zit Dakar 2021 erop. De legendarische rallycoureur gooide in het tweede deel van de marathonetappe de handdoek in de ring. Een tekort aan reserve-onderdelen en de almaar opspelende technische problemen braken de Fransman uiteindelijk op.

Loeb bestuurde dit jaar een BRX Hunter, een gloednieuwe auto van het Britse Prodrive. Samen met navigator Daniel Elena was hij meermaals in de top tien van de dag te vinden, evenals teamgenoot Nani Roma overigens. De BRX Hunter beschikt dus over snelheid, maar een nieuwe bolide gaat ook vaak gepaard met kinderziektes.

Zo ook bij Loeb en Elena. Hij begon nog wel aan het tweede deel van de marathonetappe, maar al snel liep hij een lekke band op. Toen hij niet veel later opnieuw een lekke band opliep, was het gedaan. Loeb had maar één reservewiel bij aan het begin van de etappe en de assistentietruck kampte zelf ook met problemen.

Einde verhaal dus voor Loeb. "We balen enorm voor het team", liet de Fransman weten. "Maar we hebben deze editie een hoop lessen geleerd om volgend jaar sterker terug te keren."
