Coureur laat navigator na ruzie achter in de woestijn

Dakar-coureur Ricardo Ramilo Suarez heeft voor opmerkelijk nieuws vanuit Saoedi-Arabië gezorgd. Na een ruzie verordonneerde hij zijn navigator Xavi Blanco Garcia om midden in een proef uit de wagen te stappen. Vervolgens reed Ramilo Suarez er vandoor, zonder zijn navigator. Blanco Garcia moest uren in de woestijn wachten op hulp.

De twee hadden dinsdag al onenigheid met elkaar gehad omdat ze de eindstreep niet hadden gehaald. Een dag later barstte de bom helemaal. Blanco Garcia vertelde aan AS wat er gebeurde: "Na een ruzie zei ik hem dat hij de auto stil moest zetten, want mijn leven was in gevaar. Ik stapte uit, maar toen vertelde hij me dat ik daar moest blijven staan en opeens reed hij weg. Zonder mij. Hij liet me alleen achter in de woestijn! Hij is het niet eens waard om coureur genoemd te worden, want dat is hij niet."

De in de woestijn achtergelaten Blanco Garcia had gelukkig wel een mobiele telefoon en een sateliettelefoon op zak, zodat hij hulp in kon schakelen. Toch duurde het uren voordat iemand hem oppikte. Zonder zijn navigator reed Ramilo Suarez de etappe niet uit, waardoor het tweetal definitief werd gediskwalificeerd.

    Iemand bewust achterlaten in de woestijn lijkt mij toch wel een gevalletje poging tot moord. Wat een gek zeg.

    Bwoah, er zijn genoeg mannen die een mekkerende sjagerijnige vrouw bij een pompstation achterlaten. Is nog veel gevaarlijker met droogstaande truckchauffeurs die daar bivak houden.
