Kevin Benavides bezorgt Honda de zege bij motoren

Kevin Benavides heeft de 43ste uitvoering van de Dakar Rally op zijn naam geschreven bij de motoren. Het is de eerste keer dat de Argentijn het evenement weet te winnen. Op zijn Honda bleef hij in Saoedi-Arabië merkgenoot Ricky Brabec en de concurrenten van KTM voor.

De winst in de laatste etappe ging naar Brabec, de winnaar van Dakar in 2020. Net als Benavides bestuurt de Amerikaan een Honda-motor, waardoor het Japanse merk nu twee jaar op een rij getriomfeerd heeft. Daarvoor was het steevast KTM dat met de zege aan de haal ging.

Paul Spierings eindigt waarschijnlijk als beste Nederlander bij de motoren. Hij stond 27ste bij het ingaan van de laatste etappe en de kans is klein dat hij in deze korte proef nog plekken wint of verliest, tenzij er uitvallers zijn. Spierings is nog onderweg naar de finish.

Pierre Cherpin (52) is overleden aan verwondingen van zijn crash in de zevende etappe.
Hij had zware hersenschade opgelopen doordat hij buiten bewustzijn was geraakt.
