Pierre Cherpin bezweken aan zijn verwondingen

De Dakar Rally heeft een dodelijk slachtoffer moeten betreuren. Motorrijder Pierre Cherpin, tijdens de zevende etappe reeds gevallen, bezweek gisteren tijdens een medisch transport per vliegtuig aan zijn verwondingen. De Fransman werd 52 jaar.

In de zevende etappe van Ha'il naar Sakara kwam Cherpin hard ten val. Artsen troffen hem rond 13.00 uur bewusteloos aan. In het ziekenhuis werd zwaar hersenletsel vastgesteld en de Fransman werd nadien kunstmatig in coma gehouden. Daaruit zou hij niet meer ontwaken.

Cherpin was bezig aan zijn vierde Dakar. In een verklaring staat: "Iedereen binnen de Dakar-karavaan is diep geraakt door deze tragedie. We willen ons medeleven betuigen aan zijn familie, vrienden en kennissen en we wensen hen sterkte met het verwerken van dit verlies."
