Aanhoudende rugklachten nopen Tim Coronel tot opgave

Tim en Tom Coronel gaan niet meer van start in de achtste etappe van de Dakar Rally. Tim Coronel heeft te veel last van zijn rug, de Nederlanders vinden het niet verantwoord om door te gaan. "Gezondheid gaat voor", laat Tom Coronel weten vanuit het bivak in Al Dawadimi.

Tim Coronel blesseerde zijn rug vrijdag in de zesde etappe. Intensieve fysiotherapie op de rustdag leek te helpen en gisteren gingen de broers dan ook van start in de zevende etappe. Dat ging, maar het was niet van harte.

Vanochtend bleek het helemaal mis met de rug van Tim Coronel. "Hij kan amper lopen", zegt Tom Coronel. "Hij heeft de Dakar nu vijftien keer gedaan, ik tien keer. Volgend jaar is er weer een."

Klopt. Maar op die leeftijd is het helemaal vragen om moeilijkheden. Die jongens zijn weliswaar nog best fit maar het herstel duurt boven je 50e gewoon een eeuwigheid. Fit of niet.
