Al-Attiyah wint autoklassement Dakar Rally

De winnaars van de legendarische Dakar Rally zijn bekend. De bekende woestijnrally eindigde vandaag met een korte slotetappe van Bisha naar Jeddah. In Saoedi-Arabië werden de fans twee weken lang getrakteerd op een spannende doch manke strijd tussen rallylegendes Nasser Al-Attiyah en Sébastien Loeb.

Toyota-coureur Al-Attiyah trok uiteindelijk aan het langste eind. De Qatarees stond de gehele rally aan de leiding van het klassement maar zag dat Loeb zich een waardige uitdager toonde. De legendarische WRC-kampioen kon Al-Attiyah redelijk wat partij bieden in zijn beeldschone BRX Hunter, gerund door Prodrive. Maar Loeb kwam uiteindelijk ruim tekort en Al-Attiyah kon redelijk simpel zijn vierde eindzege bijschrijven.

Audi

Voorafgaand de rally leek het er ook op dat men rekening moest houden met de ploeg van Audi. Het Duitse merk reed voor het eerst de Dakar Rally met een futuristisch concept. Ze stuurden met Carlos Sainz, Stéphane Peterhansel en Mattias Ekström een waar sterrenensemble naar de Saoedische woestijn. Ze kwamen echter van een koude kermis thuis aangezien de wagens al snel tegen problemen aanliepen. Een goede klassering zat er niet meer in maar alle drie de heren konden wel voor dagsucces gaan.

Nederlanders

Bernhard ten Brinke sloot de Rally af als beste Nederlander. Ten Brinke verscheen last minute op de deelnemerslijst nadat Erik van Loon positief testte op COVID-19. Ten Brinke reed een goede rally en eindigde in zijn Toyota als zeventiende overall. De gebroeders Coronel waren lang de beste Nederlanders maar vielen uit nadat Tim Coronel geblesseerd raakte aan zijn rug. De laatste etappe werd gewonnen door de Zuid-Afrikaanse coureur Henk Lategan in zijn Toyota.
