19-jarige Amerikaan Quintero verbreekt bizar Dakar-record

De afgelopen twee weken werd de legendarische Dakar Rally verreden. In de Saoedische woestijnen gebeurde er weer allerlei bizarre dingen en blonken sommige coureurs op bijzonder wijze uit. Er werd dan ook een haast onbreekbaar record verbroken door een zeer jonge coureur.

De 19-jarige Amerikaanse coureur Seth Quintero wist namelijk twaalf (!) etappes te winnen, inclusief proloog. Dat betekende dat hij slechts één etappe niet als winnaar over de streep kwam. In de tweede etappe kende de jongeling grote problemen waardoor hij de algemene overwinning op zijn buik kon schrijven.

In de Light Prototype-klasse ging de winst dan ook naar de Chileense coureur Francisco López Contardo. Quintero werd door zijn problemen slechts tiende in het eindklassement. Maar met zijn twaalf etappewinsten schreef hij wel een nieuwe bladzijde in het Dakar-recordboek. Hij reed het record uit de jaren 90 uit de boeken en gaf aan in 2023 op te jacht te willen gaan naar de eindoverwinning.

Dat is best wel knap en zuur tegelijk.. De proloog en 12 etappes winnen en slechts 1 niet, maar in die ene zoveel tijd verliezen dat je het algemeen klassement niet wint en zelfs slechts 10e wordt..
