Dakar Rally op laatste dag opgeschrikt door dodelijk ongeval

De legendarische Dakar Rally kende gister een verdrietig einde. Tijdens de laatste etappe in Saoedi-Arabië ging het mis op de verbindingsroute tussen Bisha en Jeddah. Er gebeurde namelijk een dodelijk ongeval met een servicevoertuig waarbij één dode is gevallen, dat maakte de organisatie van de rally bekend.

De 20-jarige monteur Quentin Lavalée overleed aan de gevolgen van het ongeluk. De Fransman zat in een servicevoertuig van het team van PH Sport. De wagen raakte een vrachtwagen en Lavalée overleed aan de gevolgen van die crash. Hoe het ongeval kon gebeuren is nog niet bekend, de lokale autoriteiten zijn nog bezig met hun onderzoek.

De andere inzittende van de servicewagen raakte gewond en was bij kennis op het moment dat hij naar het ziekenhuis werd overgebracht. Het team van PH Sport deed mee aan de vorig jaar geïntroduceerde Dakar Classic-categorie. Hierin rijden klassieke Dakar voertuigen de rally over een aangepaste route.
