Mattias Ekstrom wint seizoensopener, Albers valt uit door botsing

Mattias Ekstrom heeft zojuist de DTM-race op het circuit van Hockenheim op zijn naam geschreven. De Zweed vocht de hele race met Audi nummer twee, polesitter Timo Scheider. Op afstand werd de derde Audi van Tom Kristensen derde.

Martin Tomczyk maakte er bijna een Audi-topvier van, maar kon geen weg langs Mercedes-coureur Bruno Spengler vinden. Spengler en Paul di Resta bevonden zich in eerste instantie vlak achter de leiders, maar Spengler verloor het contact na koppelingsproblemen bij de tweede pitstop. Vervolgens was Spengler niet in staat het tempo vooraan te volgen en spendeerde de rest van de race met het afhouden van Tomczyk.

Jamie Green wordt zesde na een onzichtbare race, vlak voor Gary Paffett. Paffett lag even op de zesde positie, maar was met zijn 2007-Mercedes geen partij voor de mannen vooraan. Routenier Bernd Schneider pakt het laatste punt, vlak voor Oliver Jarvis.

Ralf Schumacher vecht zijn duels uit in de achterhoede. De Duitser komt uiteindelijk aan de finish als veertiende. In de slotfase komt de voormalig Toyota-coureur nog in de buurt bij het groepje Premat, Winkelhock en Di Resta maar kan nooit een serieuze inhaalpoging wagen.

Voor Christijan Albers werd de seizoensopener een grote deceptie. In de tweede ronde wordt hij geraakt door Ralf Schumacher in de Spitzkehre hairpin en moet in de pits opgeven met een gebroken voorwielophanging. Albers: "Het is teleurstellend mijn eerste race voor Futurecom-TME zo te eindigen. Maar we hebben een veelbelovend tempo laten zien en daar hopen we op voort te bouwen bij de volgende race."

De volgende DTM-race wordt volgend weekeinde verreden in Oschersleben.
