Scheider pakt opnieuw pole, Albers in de achterhoede

Timo Scheider vertrekt voor de tweede keer in een week tijd van pole position. Maar makkelijk ging het niet op het circuit van Oschersleben. De Audi-coureur rijdt op een kerbstone de voorkant van zijn auto eraf en moet naar binnen. Hij staat op het randje van afvallen in de eerste sessie, als hij zich met zijn enige ronde bovenaan de tijdenlijst zet. Scheider: "Om opnieuw op pole te staan is een geweldig gevoel. De auto was vanaf de eerste ronde goed. De eerste sessie was niet makkelijk, maar het was belangrijk om koel te blijven."

Tom Kristensen gaat in de tweede sessie nog naar de snelste tijd, maar komt tekort als het er echt om gaat. "Ik had sowieso niet de snelheid om Timo te pakken. Maar zo slecht is het nog niet, ik sta aan de binnenkant van de eerste bocht," aldus Kristensen.

Het derde deel van de kwalificatie telde 14 deelnemers, in plaats van de gebruikelijke acht. Het tweede deel werd gestopt met 90 seconden te gaan door een crash van Alexandre Premat. De stewards besloten vervolgens dat alle actieve coureurs doormochten naar de derde sessie.

Bruno Spengler is opnieuw de snelste Mercedes-coureur, maar wordt verslagen door ene opnieuw indrukwekkende Oliver Jarvis in een oude Audi. Spengler: ""Vijfde is teleurstellend, maar we hebben in de training een goede lange run gereden. Ik heb er vertrouwen in dat ik nog op het podium kan komen."

Ralf Schumacher wist voor het eerst de tweede sessie te bereiken, maar is daarin wel de langzaamste coureur en moet genoegen nemen met de dertiende plek. Christijan Albers eindigt als zeventiende, nog achter Matthias Lauda.
