Bernd Schneider zegeviert op Nurburgring

Mercedes-coureur Bernd Schneider heeft de DTM-race op de Nurnburgring op zijn naam geschreven. De ervaren Duitser maakte optimaal gebruik van de veranderende weersomstandigheden op het Duitse circuit. Terwijl alle Audi-coureurs de race op regenbanden startten, begon Schneider op droogweerbanden. Een goede keuze: pas tien minuten voor het einde van de race kwam de regen.

Al in de opwarmronde kwamen Audi-coureurs Matthias Ekström, Timo Scheider en Marcus Winkelhock tot de conclusie dat hun keuze voor regenbanden verkeerd was. Meteen doken ze de pits in en moesten vanuit de pitstraat starten. Mike Rockenfeller kwam beter van zijn startplaats af dan Le Mans-legende Tom Kristensen en leidde na de eerste bocht. Ook deze coureurs stonden op regenbanden en moesten een bocht later de leiding alweer afstaan aan Gary Paffett.

Pas na de tweede serie pitstops was er voor de toeschouwers weer wat actie op de baan te zien. Kristensen spinde na een inhaalpoging op Matthias Lauda in de grindbak. Een ronde later waren het Katherine Legge en Maro Engel die hun race in de grindbak zagen eindigen na een botsing. Matin Tomczyk moest in ronde 28 opgeven met mechanische pech.

De regen viel pas in ronde 33. Met nog 7 ronden te gaan was het Di Resta die als eerste de pits opzocht voor regenbanden. De andere koplopers kozen ervoor om nog langer door te blijven rijden op hun slicks, ook al werd het steeds natter op de baan. Ook Timo Scheider bezocht de pits voor regenbanden. Di Resta en Scheider gokten goed: na enkele inhaalmanoevres eindigden ze als tweede en vijfde. Ralf Schumacher werd achtste en pakte zo zijn eerste WK-punten in de DTM. Christian Albers eindigde in zijn Audi op ruim een minuut achterstand als elfde.
