Paul di Resta pakt overwinning in Barcelona

Paul di Resta heeft vanmiddag met een overwinning zijn kampioenschaps-aspiraties levend gehouden. Makkelijk ging het echter niet; tot na de eerste stop reed de Schot achter kampioenschapsleider Timo Scheider.

Bij de start passeren zowel Di Resta als Scheider polesitter Bernd Schneider. Pas na de eerste stop komt Di Resta dicht genoeg bij om een aanval te plaatsen. De auto's maken contact, maar de Schot is er voorbij en zal het gat langzaam groter maken om zijn overwinning veilig te stellen.

Bernd Schneider completeert het podium na een lang gevecht met Martin Tomczyk. Mattias Ekstrom wordt uiteindelijk vijfde, na een bijzonder chaotische laatste ronde. De chaos begint als Ekstrom Green in een spin duwt in de eerste bocht. Green krijgt Ekstrom dezelfde ronde weer te pakken en ze gaan zij-aan-zij door de laatste chicane. Ekstrom wordt uiteindelijk vijfde, terwijl Jamie Green nog twee plaatsen verliest aan Rockenfeller en Premat. Ekstrom wordt direct na de race bestraft met een 50 seconden-penalty, waardoor hij terugvalt naar de negende plek. Audi protesteert tegen de beslissing, waardoor de wedstrijdleiding beslist Ekstrom compleet te schrappen uit de uitslag en Green te bestraffen met een 30 seconden-penalty, waardoor de Mercedes-coureur als achtste eindigt.

Timo Scheider heeft de schade in het kampioenschap met een tweede plek kunnen beperken, maar de voorsprong is nu zeven punten met nog twee races te gaan. Het lijkt duidelijk dat de strijd dit jaar gaat tussen Timo Scheider en Paul di Resta. Het kampioenschap gaat verder op het Bugatti-circuit in Le Mans, waarna alleen nog de seizoensfinale in Hockenheim volgt.
