Bernd Schneider na komend weekend met pensioen

Bernd Schneider is nog één race coureur en daarna is het mooi geweest. De 44-jarige Duitser gaat met pensioen. Hij komt momenteel uit in de DTM voor Mercedes, waarmee hij al vijf keer de titel op zijn naam schreef. Tevens reed Schneider negen Grands Prix in de Formule 1. Hij zal actief blijven voor Mercedes als ambassadeur, rijinstructeur en testcoureur van het merk.

Schneider: Ik race al meer dan dertig jaar en mijn doel was altijd om door te blijven gaan zolang ik er plezier in zou hebben en competitief kan zijn. De tijd om te stoppen is nu gekomen en het geeft me gemengde gevoelens. Aan de ene kant vind ik het jammer dat ik mijn vrienden in de autosport ga verlaten, aan de andere kant kijk ik uit naar nieuwe uitdagingen. Dat ik voor AMG blijf werken na mijn actieve carrière is volkomen logisch. Ik vierde mijn grootste successen in het AMG Mercedes-team en ik verheug me op de uitdagingen die nu op mijn pad komen.

Mercedes-motorsportbaas Norbert Haug: Bernd en Mercedes zijn al zeventien jaar partners op het circuit. Dat is een van de langste en meest succesvolle samenwerkingsverbanden uit de wereld van de autosport. Mercedes-Benz heeft veel te danken aan Bernd en hij heeft zijn stempel op de DTM gedrukt. Hij is een voorbeeld voor jonge coureurs, daarnaast is hij voor mij ook een goede vriend. Ik zal hem missen achter het stuur als er races gewonnen moeten worden.
