Vietoris helpt geplaagd Mercedes aan winst op Oschersleben

Zo goed als het Mercedes in de Formule 1 vergaat, zo slecht liep het in de eerste race van het nieuwe DTM-seizoen. De Duitse autofabrikant schoof de projectleider aan de kant en dacht de nodige tijd nodig te hebben om zich te herpakken. Maar in Oschersleben was het al raak. Christian Vietoris bezorgde het merk de zege in een even mooie als chaotische race.

Regen, bandenkeuzes en moedige inhaalacties kenmerkten deze wedstrijd. Vietoris sprong het best met de omstandigheden om. Hij was aan het einde ook bestand tegen de druk van regerend kampioen Mike Rockenfeller, die op slechts 0,6 seconde achterstand over de finish kwam. Rockenfeller greep wel de koppositie in de tussenstand.

Het was voor Vietoris zijn eerste overwinning in de DTM. "Onder normale omstandigheden behoren we op dit moment niet tot de voorhoede, dus ik hoopte vooraf al op regen. Mijn gebeden zijn verhoord. Deze kans moesten we grijpen en dat hebben we gedaan, perfect. Ik ben dolgelukkig. Wat een race!"
