Mattias Ekström heeft de tweede race van het openingsweekend in de DTM op de Hockenheimring op zijn naam geschreven. In de regen bleef hij mede Audi-coureur Edoardo Mortara en Mercedes-rijder Gary Paffett voor. Het betrof de twintigste zege in de DTM voor Ekström.

Daar had de zweed 145 DTM-races voor nodig. Na afloop zei hij: "Ik heb van begin tot eind genoten van deze race. In de regen rijden is zeer veeleisend. In deze omstandigheden komt ervaring zeker van pas en ik ben nu eenmaal de oudste coureur van het veld."

De prestatie van Paffett was ook opmerkelijk, aangezien hij van achteraan startte na een straf voor een overtreding van de technische reglementen. "Maar dankzij onze regen set-up kwam het toch nog allemaal goed. Toen het begon te druppelen kreeg ik nieuwe hoop op een goed resultaat."
