Gary Paffett pakt pole position in spannende kwalificatie

Gary Paffett heeft zojuist de eerste pole position van het seizoen veroverd in Hockenheim. De Britse Mercedes-coureur was in de vierde en laatste kwalificatiesessie minder dan een tiende sneller dan de Audi van Martin Tomczyk.

In het eerste kwalificatiedeel van de DTM moeten er vier coureurs uitvallen, waarna de snelste veertien doorstromen naar het tweede deel. De kwalificatie begon meteen spannend, maar uiteindelijk waren het de twee voormalig Formule 1-coureurs Ralf Schumacher en David Coulthard die op de zestiende en zeventiende plaats afvielen. Verder konden ook de twee vrouwelijke coureurs in de DTM, Susie Stoddart (vijftiende) en Katherine Legge (achttiende), na Q1 uitstappen.

Het tweede kwalificatiedeel werd zowaar nog spannender en niemand was veilig tot de laatste seconden. De debutanten Miguel Molina (dertiende) en CongFu Cheng (veertiende) waren de eerste uitvallers in Q2. De grootste verrassing was echter dat Timo Scheider, regerend DTM-kampioen, niet door wist te dringen naar het derde kwalificatiedeel. Scheider start de race in Hockenheim morgen slechts op de negende plaats. Verder vielen ook Maro Engel (tiende), Alexandre Premat (elfde) en Markus Winkelhock (twaalfde) af.

In het derde kwalificatiedeel moeten nog eens vier coureurs afvallen, waarna de snelste vier doorstromen naar Q4 en mogen strijden om de pole position. Mattias Ekstrom was de verrassing in dit deel met een vijfde plaats, maar het verschil met de snelste coureur, Jamie Green, was slechts twee tienden. Oliver Jarvis, Mike Rockenfeller en ook Paul di Resta kon na een foutje uitstappen.

In het vierde en beslissende kwalificatiedeel hebben de overgebleven vier coureurs slechts één ronde om een snelle tijd te rijden. Uiteindelijk was het Gary Paffett, de vice-kampioen van 2009, die de eerste pole van 2010 voor zich opeistte. De Brit was slechts 0.076 seconden sneller dan Audi-coureur Martin Tomczyk. Bruno Spengler en Jamie Green reden in hun Mercedessen naar de derde en vierde startplaatsen. Het verschil tussen Paffett en Green was slechts anderhalve tiende.
