Timo Scheider kondigt afscheid aan

Audi-coureur Timo Scheider rijdt vanmiddag zijn laatste race van zijn DTM-loopbaan op de Hockenheimring. De Duitser, inmiddels 37 jaar, pakte in 2008 en 2009 de titel met Audi. De laatste jaren werden de prestaties uit zijn hoogtijdagen niet meer behaald, al wist Scheider vorig jaar nog wel de finalerace op het circuit van Hockenheim te winnen.

Scheider maakte in 2000 zijn debuut in de DTM. Scheider maakte zijn debuut bij Opel en stapte in 2006 over naar Audi. Daar zou hij de rest van de tijd blijven rijden, al werd de Duitser in 2014 wel terug gezet naar het minder goede team van Phoenix. De beslissing van Scheider om te stoppen komt niet uit de lucht vallen: volgens Scheider kreeg hij vlak voor het weekend in Hockenheim een telefoontje van de hoge heren van Audi dat het contract niet verlengd wordt.

"Het klopt dat mijn contract niet verlengd wordt. Dit hoorde ik twee dagen voor het weekend hier in Hockenheim. Ik stop ermee en dit wordt zeker weten een van de meest emotionele momenten van mijn leven. Ik heb veel gemaakt in de DTM en zal de hoogtepunten en dieptepunten nooit vergeten. Wat ik hierna ga doen weet ik nog niet, maar mijn loopbaan in de autosport zit er zeker nog niet op", aldus Scheider.
