Team MTEK verhuist van DTM naar WEC

BMW adopteert voor 2017 een andere structuur voor de DTM. De Duitse autofabrikant halveert het aantal teams van vier naar twee. Team RMG en Team RBM blijven in de DTM, voor Team Schnitzer en Team MTEK is een plek meer in de toerwagenklasse.

Team Schnitzer gaat zich toeleggen op de GT-racerij, terwijl Team MTEK de terugkeer van BMW in het World Endurance Championship in goede banen mag leiden. Team MTEK is van de Nederlander Ernest Knoors. Hij verheugt zich op het nieuwe project voor zijn renstal.

Knoors: "In 2013 namen we voor het eerst deel aan de DTM met Team MTEK en sindsdien hebben we heel veel geleerd. We kijken ontzettend uit naar de nieuwe uitdaging die ons wacht in het WEC. De lat ligt daar net als in de DTM zeer hoog. 2017 zal voor ons een intensief voorbereidingsjaar worden, waarna we het in het daaropvolgende jaar op kunnen gaan nemen tegen de andere teams."

BMW-motorsportbaas Jens Marquardt voegt toe: "BMW Team MTEK heeft de afgelopen jaren aangetoond dat het een uitstekende vertegenwoordiger was in de DTM. Het zal zich nu volledig gaan richten op de voorbereidingen op ons nieuw avontuur in het WEC."
