Di Resta verslaat Paffet voor pole position in Shanghai

Paul di Resta heeft zojuist de pole position voor de DTM-race in Shanghai gepakt. De Britse Mercedes-coureur was in de kwalificatie ruim een tiende sneller dan de outsider voor de titel Gary Paffett. Kampioenschapsleider Bruno Spengler start de race vanaf een bijna kansloze zeventiende plaats.

Di Resta kreeg de pole in handen door zijn snelste tijd in het derde kwalificatiedeel. Q4 werd helemaal niet meer gereden, omdat Jamie Green in zijn allereerste ronde in het vierde deel crashte. Daarna werd de kwalificatie stilgelegd en werd besloten dat de tijden uit Q3 de volgorde van de top-vier zouden bepalen. Dat betekend dat titelrivaal Paffett samen met Di Resta op de eerste rij start. Green en Timo Scheider starten gezamelijk vanaf de tweede startrij.

Markus Winkelhock eindigde de kwalificatie op de vijfde plaats, gevolgd door David Coulthard die hiermee zijn beste startpositie pakte. Miguel Molina, Martin Tomczyk, Mattias Ekstrom en Oliver Jarvis maakten de top-tien compleet. Kampioenschapsleider Bruno Spengler kwam in Q1 wijd door de bocht en raakte de muur, net als in de tweede vrije training. De dag voor de Canadees leek voorbij, maar kon alsnog de baan op toen zijn auto optijd werd gerepareed. Echter, daarna kende Spengler pech met een rode vlag en start de race pas vanaf de zeventiende plaats. Hiermee lijken zijn titelkansen over.
