Trekt routinier Ekström zich terug uit de DTM?

Audi-coureur Mattias Ekström moest bij de seizoensfinale van de DTM lijdzaam toezien hoe merkgenoot en rookie Rene Rast met de titel aan de haal ging. De 39-jarige Zweed kwam zelf drie puntjes tekort om zich voor een derde keer tot DTM-kampioen te kronen. De grote vraag is of er nog meer kansen zullen komen.

Ekström kan nog niet met zekerheid zeggen of hij doorgaat in de DTM. "Je kunt elke dag stoppen, niemand heeft de verplichting om te blijven doen wat hij of zij doet. Ik wil iets doen waarvoor ik me dag en nacht kan motiveren. Je moet het gevoel hebben dat je ergens vol voor wil gaan en alles kunt geven. Is dat gevoel er niet, dan is het moeilijk om jezelf te motiveren."

De Zweed combineerde de DTM dit seizoen met de WRX, het wereldkampioenschap rallycross. Dat vergde privé veel van hem. "Zoiets is voor elke relatie zwaar. Ik zie mijn kinderen nauwelijks. Ik zou het liefst elke dag met mijn kinderen spelen, maar ik ben ook graag op het circuit. Ik realiseer me wel dat ik graag meer tijd thuis door zou willen brengen."

"We zullen zien", vervolgt Ekström tegenover Speed Week. Over zijn titelnederlaag verklaarde hij: "Op de dag zelf was ik verbitterd, kostte het moeite om te verkroppen. Ik vecht hier al tien jaar voor en ben een aantal keer dichtbij geweest. Op maandag was ik nog vermoeid. Dinsdag was het al voltooid verleden tijd voor mij, zoals alles dat achter me ligt."

Het zou Audi Sport sieren als ze bij het vertrek van Ekström uit de DTM dan Frijns het stoeltje zouden geven.

kan me haast niet een DTM seizoen zonder Ekstrom voorstellen.. die man hoort er gewoon bij, misschien kan ie samen met audi aan een ander project meewerken ?

Audi Sport heeft momenteel geen plek voor hem in het Audi Sport Formula E team, en heeft diverse races voor Audi gewonnen dit jaar, en is de kersverse Blancpain GT Sprint Cup kampioen met Audi.

Frijns zou maar al te graag instappen, en zal zeker hoge ogen gooien in de DTM. Het zou prachtig zijn voor zowel hem als Audi Sport wanneer Frijns DTM samen met Blancpain GT kan combineren komend jaar.
