Maro Engel houdt de DTM voor gezien

Maro Engel verlaat de DTM om zich volledig te concentreren op zijn activiteiten in de Formule E en de GT-racerij. De 32-jarige Duitser eindigde vorig jaar als vijftiende met 51 punten in de toerwagenklasse. Nu voor 2018 meerdere races van de DTM en de Formule E op dezelfde datum zijn ingeroosterd valt het voor hem niet meer te combineren.

Spijtig, maar het is niet anders, zo redeneert Engel. "Ik had wat recht te zetten na mijn eerste periode in de DTM en dat is me vorig jaar aardig gelukt door mijn eerste overwinning te boeken in Moskou. Ik ben Mercedes dankbaar dat ze dat mogelijk hebben gemaakt. Ik bedank het team voor een fantastische tijd. Het is jammer dat de kalenders van de Formule E en de DTM elkaar dit jaar deels overlappen."

"Er bestaat helaas geen makkelijke oplossing, want ik had graag ook dit jaar aan de start verschenen in de DTM, helemaal omdat dit het laatste jaar van Mercedes in die klasse is. Met het oog op de toekomst hebben we echter besloten dat ik me in 2018 volledig op de Formule E en GT-racerij ga richten. Ik ben wel van plan om enkele DTM-races bij te wonen en ik hoop dat Mercedes met de titel afscheid kan nemen van de DTM."
