Audi stelt Ekström in de gelegenheid afscheid te nemen

De DTM-loopbaan van Mattias Ekström krijgt toch nog een vervolg. Audi zet voor de opening van het nieuwe seizoen op de Hockenheimring een extra auto in en stelt de Zweed zo in staat om in stijl afscheid te nemen van de toerwagenklasse. Ekström koos er na vorig seizoen voor om zich volledig op de WRX te storten. Robin Frijns is dit jaar zijn vervanger bij Audi.

In het eerste weekend van dit seizoen zullen de twee echter samen racen. Audi geeft Ekström een afscheidscadeau in de vorm van twee DTM-races. "Mattias heeft in de winter besloten om zijn unieke DTM-carrière te beëindigen. Hij vertelde ons toen dat hij graag op een speciale manier afscheid wil nemen van de DTM-fans. Zo ontstond het idee voor een afscheidsweekend. Het is geweldig voor hem, voor de DTM, voor de fans en voor Audi dat hij in Hockenheim nog één keer van de partij zal zijn", aldus Audi-motorsportbaas Dieter Gass.

Ekström: "Ik ga ervan uit dat ik dit weekend meer handtekeningen uit zal moeten delen dan ik normaal in een volledig seizoen deed, maar dat hoort erbij. Ik doe het met plezier. Het is geweldig dat Audi dit mogelijk maakt voor mij. Na zeventien prachtige jaren was het een moeilijke beslissing om te stoppen met de DTM. De dag van de aankondiging was een van de meest emotionele dagen uit mijn carrière. Ik verwacht ook zeker het nodige kippenvel in Hockenheim. Ik verheug me er nu al op!"
