Honda weigerde DTM-avontuur aan te gaan met Red Bull en Aston Martin

Honda heeft de plannen van Red Bull gedwarsboomd om ook in het DTM een samenwerking aan te gaan. De Japanse fabrikant wilde niet als motorleverancier meewerken aan het project van R-Motorsport, dat in 2019 Aston Martins inzet in de klasse.

Aan het eind van 2018 stapte Mercedes uit het DTM en een vervanger werd al snel gevonden: R-Motorsport zou namens Aston Martin een aantal bolides in de klasse gaan inzetten. Al gauw werden Red Bull en Honda opgetrommeld om vanaf 2020 zich bij het project te voegen. Red Bull onderhoudt al nauwe banden met Aston Martin, dat in de Formule 1 de titelsponsor van het team is. Ook ontwierp ontwerper Adrian Newey de Valkyrie.

Honda heeft geen interesse in DTM

Het plan was aanvankelijk om de Honda-motor uit het Super GT-kampioenschap, een 2.0 liter viercilinder, te gaan gebruiken in het DTM, maar Honda wenste niet mee te werken aan het project. Daardoor moest R-Motorsport zelf een passende krachtbron ontwikkelen voor de Aston Martin DTM-bolide. Die motor is ontwikkeld in samenwerking met HWA, het bedrijf dat ook verantwoordelijk was voor de DTM-bolides van Mercedes.

"Dit was een project waarbij R-Motorsport auto's had ingezet met Honda-motoren, waarbij ook een bepaalde betrokkenheid zou komen van Red Bull Technology", vertelde Helmut Marko aan Autosport over de geflopte deal. "Honda keurde het plan af. Ze hadden wel een motor, maar waren niet geïnteresseerd in de klasse."

Honda haakte dus af en daarmee verdween volgens Marko ook de interesse van Red Bull. "We hadden geen interesse om met min of meer een team van Mercedes samen te werken. Onze relatie met Mercedes is nog niet zo goed dat zo'n samenwerking zou lukken."

Haha. Ga die RB nu maar op orde brengen(voor volgend jaar ook) anders is de relatie met Mercedes nog slechter na 2020 :p

Met andere woorden; we willen niet dat er een Mercedes gelieerd team in onze keuken komt kijken.
Wel jammer dat Honda niet heeft toegehapt, zou een mooie toevoeging zijn aan de DTM.

  Ook mijn gedacht maar ik vertrouw Honda genoeg dat het een weloverwogen besluit is geweest om het niet te doen. Ik vermoed dat de DTM commercieel niet interessant genoeg is voor onze Japanners. De samenwerking met Red Bull is nog pril. Zodra ze meer races gewonnen hebben samen en misschien een wk binnenslepen kan er nog veel veranderen. Maar ik geef Royalere gelijk. Eerst maar die Red Bull op orde krijgen en dan de rest.

  In de DTM gaan ze dit seizoen ook met 2l turbomotoren (620pk en class one regelementen) rijden, regels die in de Japanse Super GT klasse al jaren worden gehanteerd. Er zijn gesprekken gaande over een gezamenlijke race van deze 2 klasses in Europa, en o.a Assen is daar een geschikte kandidaat voor volgens Gerhard Berger.

  Dit jaar al twee gecombineerde races Schwantz, een in Duitsland en een in Japan.
  
  Ik volg de SuperGT al 'n aantal jaren ( you tube), schitterende klasse. Ook Jenson Button rijdt erin en afgelopen seizoen kampioen samen met Yamamoto.

  GT300 is ook leuk. Heb je van die gekke project-dingen als een Prius met een V8 :).Mochten ze DTM en SuperGT gaan combineren, dan is het hopen dat de GT300 niet wegvalt.
  Al zie ik het sowieso niet gebeuren dat ze er een internationale klasse van willen maken ivm de kosten.

Honda doet mee in de racerij om pr-redenen. Aston Martin piggybacked nu al mee als fabrikant op de investeringen van Honda in de F1. Op de Red Bull zie je de Honda-naam amper staan en denken genoeg mensen dat het Aston Martin is die de autopartner is. Dit wordt versterkt door het feit dat de coureurs ook met een Aston Martin rondrijden. En dan zouden ze in de DTM ook nog eens de techniek moeten doen voor een heel ander automerk?

Als ze Honda in die klasse willen hebben moeten ze gewoon een NSX gebruiken, en de regels veranderen zodat dat ding toegestaan wordt (DTM staat momenteel geen middenmotoren toe als ik me niet vergis). Kortom, gewoon de SuperGT-regels overnemen. Misschien maak je op die manier van de DTM weer een klasse met enige internationale allure. Momenteel is het vooral archaïsme dat daar hoogtij viert.

Overigens is het hebben van geen interesse wel wat anders dan het dwarsbomen van Red Bull, toch? Ook 'weigeren' vind ik wat te kort door de bocht.
