Philipp Eng pakt eerste DTM-zege na vroege pitstop

BMW-coureur Philipp Eng eist vandaag zijn eerste DTM-overwinning op in een wedstrijd die volledig op zijn kop werd gezet door de Safety Car-situatie. De Safety-Car kwam de baan op nadat de Aston Martin-coureurs Jake Dennis en Daniel Juncadella hun auto naast de baan hadden geparkeerd.

De Safety Car-periode zorgde ervoor dat de mensen die nog niet gestopt waren, onder andere Bruno Sprengler, Marco Wittmann en René Rast hun stop na de Safety Car-situatie moesten maken. Sprengler had voor de onderbreking de leiding genomen door vanaf de derde plaats meteen naar voren te rijden.

Rast's race eindigde toen hij elf ronden van het einde zijn Audi in de garage parkeerde met een onbekend probleem. In de tussentijd was Philipp Eng aan de leiding gekomen, de Zwitser was de race als zevende gestart.

Eng klom al snel op naar de vijfde plaats en maakte en vroege pitstop. Achter hem finishte Joel Eriksson en Nico Muller om de tweede plaats. Eriksson ging in de laatste ronde bij de chicane rechtdoor, maar kreeg het toch voor elkaar om Muller achter zich te houden.

Robin Frijns eindigde de wedstrijd als twaalfde nadat hij een vijf seconden tijdstraf kreeg. Frijns zat in de groep die nog niet gestopt waren voordat de Safety Car de baan op kwam. Onze landgenoot reed daarna nog wel de snelste ronde, maar zag zichzelf uiteindelijk vijf seconden te kort komen om punten te halen.

Eng is een Oostenrijker, goede race gezien het is mij wel ontgaan of het mogelijk was om net voor het sluiten van de pitstraat (tijdens SC) te pitten, Di Resta en Rockenfeller zijn zo wel gevoelig naar voor gekomen leek dus veruit de beste tactic.

Zeer matige race van Frijns, zijn start was in eerste instantie al niet goed met 2 plekken verlies, en toen kwam daar ook nog die 5 seconden straf bij voor een jumpstart. Ook bij de herstart na de safetycar liet hij zich vrij eenvoudig passeren door Glock. Achteraf gezien maakt het niet veel uit doordat de SC de race voor hem en de coureurs voor hem toch al heel slecht uitpakte, hopenlijk gaat het morgen een heel stuk beter.
