Audi neemt na dit jaar afscheid van de DTM

Audi heeft bekendgemaakt de DTM te zullen verlaten. De Duitse autofabrikant keert de toerwagenserie na 2020 de rug toe. Het vertrek van Audi komt niet helemaal uit de lucht vallen, maar de huidige coronacrisis heeft wel het beslissende zetje gegeven. Het Duitse merk is sinds 2000 onafgebroken actief in de DTM en boekte 114 overwinningen in de serie.

Hans-Joachim Rothenpeiler, bestuurslid bij Audi, legt uit: "We hopen dat deze lastige situatie snel verbetert zodat we alsnog aan een aantal DTM-races deel kunnen nemen dit jaar. De fans verdienen dat, net als de organisatie en onze coureurs, teams en partners. Zij hebben na dit besluit nu gepast de tijd gekregen om zich na 2020 op nieuwe avonturen te kunnen storten. Autosport is een belangrijk onderdeel van het DNA van Audi en zal dat ook blijven."

DTM

DTM-baas Gerhard Berger zat na de mededeling van Audi in zak en as. "Dit is een zware dag voor de autosport in Duitsland en in heel Europa. Ik betreur het besluit van Audi om zich na dit seizoen terug te trekken. Hoewel we de beslissing respecteren, stelt deze aankondiging op korte termijn de ITR, onze partner BMW en onze teams voor een aantal uitdagingen."

"Gezien de moeilijke situatie waar we ons tijdens deze coronacrisis toch al in bevinden hadden we gehoopt op een meer verenigde aanpak. Dit besluit verslechtert de situatie echter alleen maar. De toekomst van de DTM is nu afhankelijk van hoe onze partners en sponsors reageren op dit besluit."

BMW

Door het naderende afscheid van Audi blijft BMW als enige autofabrikant over in de DTM. De vraag is of zij het zien zitten om de serie in 2021 in hun eentje te dragen zonder concurrentie. "Samen met de ITR hebben we ons altijd fanatiek ingezet voor de toekomst en verdere ontwikkeling van de DTM. zullen nu vanuit alle kanten moeten bekijken wat de gevolgen zullen zijn van dit besluit", verklaarde BMW in een reactie.

  Als de Honda ook niet gaat dit jaar trekken ze er ook de stekker uit.
  
  Als je als autofabrikant iets aan motorsport wil doen in recessie tijd, ga je naar de FE. Veel meer van toepassing voor de auto toekomst, kost geen drol, en toch leuke exposure + groen imago.

  Dat probeerden ze nu juist te bewerkstelligen de afgelopen jaren. Reglement op elkaar afgestemd, demoraces in elkaars seizoenfinales. maar terwijl itr en berger zo'n fusie zeer zien zitten blijft de interesse vanuit Japan op een lage pit.

  Nou leuk... een DTM met alleen BMW. Oh... en als je het artikel even.leest is nog onduidelijk of BMW wel door wil zonder concurrentie.

  De DTM heeft een veel te duits imago... De auto's zijn werkelijk 1 van de mooiste race-auto's in mijn ogen. Niet alleen om te zien, maar gewoon het hele rijgedrag. Alleen door het imago wordt DTM zo vaak gepasseerd door leuke merken, daar waar Volvo, Hyundai, Cupra, Honda, Alfa Romeo & ja hoor ook Audi... liever voor WTCR kiezen. Ja diezelfde Audi trekt daar de stekker niet uit in die slome hatchbackjes... Als ik naar Hatchbackjes wil kijken, kijk in naar WRX.

Een mooi voorbeeld van een klasse waar het in de loop ven de jaren steeds verder over de top heen ging en nu het loodje moet leggen.
Jammer maar helaas laten we hopen dat niet meer raceklassen gaan volgen al vrees ik het ergste.

DTM vond ik ooit leuk maar dan heeeel lang geleden toen doe auto's nog echt leken op onze straatautos ZONDER die verdomde aerokits waardoor elke auto steeds meer op elkaar ging lijken. De Britse toerwagenkampioenschap BTCC doet het wat dat betreft veel beter imo: die auto's lijken in iedergeval nog op onze eigen auto die geparkeerd staat op je stoep.
