Race twee in Zolder: Frijns valt uit, Rast wint dominant

De titelaspiraties van Robin Frijns kunnen voorlopig in de ijskast. In de tweede DTM-race op zolder viel de Nederlander uit door een crash buiten zijn toedoen. Leider in de stand en titelverdediger Rene Rast pakte dominant de overwinning en is hard op weg naar zijn derde titel. Zijn concurrent, Nico Müller, werd tweede en Robert Kubica pakte verrassend de derde plaats en zijn eerste podium.

In de tweede ronde ging het gelijk mis voor Frijns. Jonathan Aberdein mistte zijn rempunt bij de Villeneuve-chicane. Die tikte Fabio Scherer hard aan op de achterkant en de auto van de Zwitser werd onbestuurbaar en schoot door. Die botste daardoor weer op de Nederlander. De balende Frijns kon met een gebroken stuurstang zijn weg niet meer vervolgen. De Safety Car moest de baan opkomen, zodat alle troep opgeruimd kon worden.

Na de herstart waren er weer incidenten. Lucas Auer knalde in de laatste bocht hard tegen Benoit Teluyer en beiden moesten hun race staken. Philippe Eng rook opeens brand in zijn wagen en op de beelden waren er vlammen aan de voorkant te zien door onderdelen die tegen de grond aanschuurden. De Oostenrijker kon op tijd uitstappen totdat de auto vlam vatte. Dit alles zorgde voor een nieuwe Safety Car-situatie.

Bij de tweede hervatting had Ferdinand Habsburg het lastig. De op pole gestarte Oostenrijker viel na zijn pitstop verder terug. Müller probeerde zijn directe concurrent om de titel te bedreigen, maar moest toezien hoe Rast verder uitliep in de wedstrijd.

Robert Kubica beleefde een goede race en profiteerde van de chaos en uitvalbeurten. Met een prachtige inhaalactie op Habsburg reed de Pool richting het podium.

Rast controleerde het laatste deel van de race en kwam als overwinnaar over de streep. De Audi-coureur kent een geweldige tweede seizoenshelft. De Duitser heeft met de overwinning op Zolder zijn vierde zege achter elkaar behaald op dit legendarische circuit.

Met 19 punten voorsprong op Müller en met twee races te gaan, is Rast de topfavoriet om de titel binnen te slepen. Frijns blijft steken op 263 punten en heeft nu 41 punten achterstand. De Nederlander heeft theoretisch nog een kans. De laatste twee races zijn volgende week in Hockenheim. Voor beide wedstrijden zijn totaal nog 56 punten te scoren.

  Helaas. Erg jammer inderdaad. Wel mooi vind ik het pdium voor Kubica. Daarmee laat hij zien, het racen niet verleerd te hebben.

Als een duveltje slaat die verrekte Rast op het eind weer toe. Paar races vrijwel kansloos voor de titel en als favoriet het laatste weekend na 3 overwinning op rij in Zolder. Zo zonde voor Robin, dit seizoen moest het gebeuren en hij stond er zo goed voor vooraf aan het weekend.
