Mercedes steunt klantenteams voor terugkeer in de DTM

Het merk Mercedes keert komend seizoen definitief terug in de DTM. Niet in de vorm van een fabrieksteam, maar de Duitse autofabrikant stelt wel auto's, coureurs en mogelijk zelfs financiële middelen beschikbaar voor eventuele klantenteams. Motorsport-Total.com bericht dat Mercedes erop mikt om met vier of vijf wagens op de DTM-grid te staan in 2021.

Tot op heden heeft alleen GruppeM Racing aangegeven het DTM-seizoen aan te vangen met een Mercedes-AMG GT3. Nu het Duitse merk aangekondigd heeft klantenteams te ondersteunen, volgen wellicht meer teams dat voorbeeld. De autofabrikant richt zich voor komend jaar naast de Formule 1 helemaal op de GT-racerij en daar valt de DTM nieuwe stijl onder.

Mercedes kent een rijke geschiedenis in de DTM. De Duitse autofabrikant behaalde in het verleden onder meer elf rijderstitels, veertien titels bij de teams en zeven constructeurstitels. Eind 2018 trok het merk de stekker uit het vorige DTM-project, waarna alleen BMW en Audi overbleven. Het vertrek van Audi na 2020 noopte de klasse om zich te transformeren tot GT-serie, met de comeback van Mercedes tot gevolg.

Het lijkt mij een beetje zonde om zo'n goede naam weg te gooien. Op de meeste autosport klasses komen niet heel veel mensen af maar de DTM wel. Als je het een nieuwe naam gaat geven ben je 5 jaar verder om wat op te bouwen. In Zandvoort reed ( of rijdt) de Blancpain cup. Dikke machines maar bij l... [Lees verder]

    Ik ben eigenlijk best wel nieuwsgierig naar deze klasse. Ze moeten het alleen geen DTM meer noemen. Een nieuwe naam zou beter passen. Iedere vergelijking met het DTM zoals het ooit eens was gaan mank.

      Zeker als ook Red Bull met Ferrari mee gaat doen..... Al reed Alfa Romeo in het verleden ook mee, maar sowieso zal een nieuwe naam ook weer nieuwe glans kunnen opleveren, die de laatste jaren mat is geworden...

      We hebben het er van de week nog over gehad Joeppp, GT is voor veel mensen niet interessant, DTM wel.
