Edoardo Mortara aan kop in eerste training Red Bull Ring

Edoardo Mortara heeft tijdens de eerste vrije training in Oostenrijk de snelste tijd gereden. De Italiaan was in zijn 2008-Audi 0.129 seconden sneller dan Christian Vietoris. Filipe Albuquerque eindigde als derde.

Net als tijdens de testdag van donderdag kwamen de 2009-auto's tekort tijdens de training. Het verschil tussen de eerste vier rijders was echter niet groot. Slechts twee tienden scheidden Mortara op de eerste positie en David Coulthard op de vierde stek van elkaar. Martin Tomczyk reed naar de derde tijd, gevolgd door Mike Rockenfeller, Maro Engel en Miguel Molina.

Renger van der Zande kende een goede sessie en eindigde met een achterstand van negen tienden op Mortara als negende. Topcoureurs als Gary Paffett (12), Timo Scheider (13), Mattias Ekstrom (14) en kampioenschapsleider Bruno Spengler (16) kwamen niet verder dan een plaats in de middenmoot.
