Van der Linde pakte derde zege van seizoen op Nurburgring en loopt verder uit in kampioenschap

Kelvin van der Linde pakte zaterdagmiddag op indrukwekkende wijze zijn derde overwinning van het seizoen op de Nurburgring met een hattrick: pole, snelste rondentijd en de winst. Met zijn ABT Sportsline Audi bleef de Zuid-Afrikaan de Duitse gastrijder Luca Stolz, rijdend in de Mercedes-AMG van Toksport WRT-team, voor met iets minder dan vijf seconden. De Zwitser Philip Ellis kwam als derde over de meet in zijn WINWARD Mercedes-AMG.

Na afloop zei Van der Linde opgewekt: "Ik geniet dit seizoen van elke seconde. Het heeft zo lang geduurd voordat ik eindelijk in de DTM kwam. Ik bleef bij Audi op de deur kloppen met de vraag of ze een DTM-stoel voor me vrij hadden. Nu ben ik nog blijer om tegen deze sterke jongens te racen. Het was een intense race. Bij de start en de herstart kon ik vooraan blijven en de leiding behouden. Pas na de bandenwissel moest ik hard vechten. Er was ook enig contact, er worden harde gevechten geleverd. Ik hield het koel en bleef kalm.''

Door de klinkende zege van Van der Linde breidt de 25-jarige coureur zijn voorsprong in het rijdersklassement verder uit en heeft nu een gat geslagen van 45 punten naar de nummer twee, Maximilian Götz. Formule 2-coureur Liam Lawson zakte door zijn dertiende plek en nulscore naar de derde plek in de rangschikking en heeft 49 punten achterstand.

In de spectaculaire DTM-race volop duels stonden voor het eerst 23 auto's op de startgrid sinds een lange tijd. Bovendien debuteerde Porsche in de DTM, maar Michael Ammermüller moest na de openingsronde al uit de race stappen.

Zondagmiddag is de tweede race op de Nurburgring. De wedstrijd duurt een uur plus twee ronden en een pitstop is verplicht.
