MotoGP-legende Rossi kon overstap maken naar de DTM

MotoGP-legende Valentino Rossi nam vorig jaar afscheid van zijn sport en heeft zijn pijlen nu gericht op een autosport-carrière. De Italiaan heeft al geruime tijd interesse in een overstap naar vier wielen en gaat in 2022 zijn droom in vervulling brengen. Hij gaat in de GT World Challenge Europe rijden, maar hij kon ook terecht in een veel grotere klasse.

Rossi wordt al voor lange tijd in verband gebracht met een overstap naar de autosport. In het verleden testte hij al meer dan eens met Formule 1-materiaal. Hij was zelfs dichtbij een overstap naar het Formule 1-team van Ferrari. Recenter reed hij enkele rondjes in een kampioensauto van Lewis Hamilton. Door zijn leeftijd zit een Formule 1-debuut er niet meer in maar hij kon wel terecht in meerdere andere klassen.

Gesprekken

Zo kon Rossi voor aankomend seizoen ook de overstap maken naar de DTM. De prestigieuze toerwagen-klasse viste echter naast het net. DTM-topman Gerhard Berger legt het uit tegenover Motorsport-Magazin: "Er waren wat gesprekken met Valentino's management. Maar het werd al snel duidelijk dat hij zijn primaire focus wilde leggen op de lange afstandsracerij."

Ervaring

Rossi wil de nodige ervaring opdoen en in de GT World Challenge Europe kan hij dat doel makkelijker bereiken dan in de DTM. Berger kan niets anders dan respect er voor hebben: "Dat betekent dat je veel tijd achter het stuur nodig hebt. Dat is simpelweg nodig om ervaring op te doen. De DTM kan die mogelijkheid echter niet bieden. Daarom begrijp ik zijn keuze volledig."
