Mattias Ekström scoort eerste seizoenszege op de Nürburgring

Mattias Ekstrom heeft een perfect weekend op de beste manier afgesloten. De Zweedse coureur bleef in een weinig opwindende race kampioenschapsleider Bruno Spengler voor. De Canadees kreeg twee ronden voor het einde de tweede plaats cadeau van Mike Rockenfeller, die zich verremde.

Ekstrom had de hele race eigenlijk weinig te vrezen van de concurrentie. Achter hem waren Rockenfeller en Spengler vanaf het begin al met elkaar in gevecht en het gat zou nooit groter worden dan een seconde. Met nog twee ronden te gaan verremde Rockenfeller zich bij het ingaan van de eerste bocht, waardoor Spengler opschoof naar de tweede plaats.

Het gevecht voor de vierde plaats was een stuk heviger. Edoardo Mortara, Jamie Green en Martin Tomczyk maakten allen contact in de openingsronde, waarna Tomzyck zijn bolide schade bezorgde aan de voorkant na een touché met Miguel Molina. De Duitser viel terug tot de zevende plaats, maar was uiteindelijk wel de grote winnaar van de eerste serie pitstops.

Tomczyk was opgeklommen naar de vierde plaats en behield deze positie ook na de tweede stop. Echter, Timo Scheider wist meer uit zijn nieuwe banden te halen en ging Tomczyk voorbij. Hierdoor verliest Tomczyk veel punten op kampioenschapsleider Spengler, die zijn voorsprong nu heeft uitgebouwd tot zeven punten. Jamie Green eindigde als zesde, gevolgd door Mortara en Paffett.

[LEFT_IMG=13725][/LEFT_IMG]Renger van der Zande was in het begin van de race betrokken bij het gevecht om de achtste plaats, maar moest later afhaken. Uiteindelijk kwam de Nederlander als elfde aan de finish, vlak achter Oliver Jarvis. Ralf Schumacher was de enige uitvaller van de race, nadat hij in de eerste ronde in aanraking kwam met David Coulthard. In de tweede bocht kreeg Schumacher een tikje van de Schot en kwam na een spin niet meer van zijn plaats.
