Spengler bezorgt BMW de titel met zege in Hockenheim

Bruno Spengler is de nieuwe DTM-kampioen. In een rechtstreeks duel versloeg de Canadees zijn rivaal Gary Paffett op de Hockenheimring en boog zodoende zijn achterstand van drie punten om in de titel met vier punten voorsprong. BMW heeft in het eerste jaar terug in de toerwagenklasse meteen de titel voor zich opgeëist.

Het is het eerste kampioenschap voor Spengler, nadat hij een aantal keer dichtbij kwam. Sinds 2006 eindigde hij achtereenvolgens als tweede, tweede, vijfde, vierde, derde en nogmaals derde. Paffett ging het hele seizoen aan de leiding, maar het was niet genoeg. Een slechte start deed hem op de Hockenheimring de das om.

Audi beleefde een belabberd laatste weekend van het jaar. Het Duitse merk blunderde bij de pitstop van Mattias Ekstrom en stuurde hem met een los rechter voorwiel op pad, met een uitvalbeurt tot gevolg. Edoardo Mortara finishte als enige namens Audi in de punten. Roemloos was het einde van de carrière van David Coulthard, die het na een tik van Timo Scheider voor gezien hield.
