Mika Häkkinen begint op 22 april op de Hockenheimring aan zijn derde seizoen in de DTM. De Fin eindigde in 2005 als vijfde en vorig jaar als zesde, dit jaar moet hij toch echt mee kunnen doen om de titel. De Mercedes-coureur bereidt zich met zijn teamgenoten voor in het Spaanse Mallorca. Häkkinen: Ik bereid me goed en intensief voor op het komende seizoen, zodat het dit jaar wel goed gaat.

De wereldkampioen Formule 1 van 1998 en 1999 is op jacht naar zijn eerste titel in de toerwagens. Vorig jaar ging zijn collega bij Mercedes, Bernd Schneider, nog aan de haal met de titel. Häkkinen moest zich tevreden stellen met slechts 25 punten, vijf minder dan in zijn debuutjaar. Bovendien won de Fin geen enkel zege, iets dat hem in 2005 wel lukte.

Toch is hij nog steeds tevreden met zijn keuze voor de DTM. Ik sta er nog volledig achter. Ik heb een geweldig team met goede mensen die hard werken voor een goed resultaat. Ik voel me op dit moment geweldig thuis in deze klasse en ik ben volgens mij beter in vorm dan ooit, aldus de voormalig coureur van het Formule 1-team van McLaren.
