Zware crash ontsiert overwinning Ekstrom

Mattias Ekstrom heeft de eerste race van het nieuwe DTM-seizoen gewonnen. De Audi-coureur kwam dankzij een afwijkende strategie aan kop en bleef stalgenoot Martin Tomczyk voor. Alle andere coureurs die punten scoorden komen uit voor Mercedes, met Daniel La Rosa op het laatste plekje van het podium.

Het begin van de race op de Hockenheimring werd opgeschrikt door een heftige crash. Audi-coureur Tom Kristensen spinde bij het opkomen van de flauwe bocht Parabolika en kwam overdwars op de baan te staan. Audi-coureur Alexandre Premat en Mercedes-rijdster Susie Stoddart reden vol in de Audi A4, die uit elkaar spatte. De race werd dertig minuten stilgelegd en zowel Kristensen als Premat kregen uitgebreid medische hulp, maar naar het zich laat aanzien heeft alleen de Fransman een rugblessure aan de hevige botsing overgehouden.

Bij de herstart ging Tomczyk aan de leiding, maar een foutje in de hairpin kostte hem twee plaatsen. Pas in de laatste ronde steeg hij weer een plekje door Bruno Spengler in te halen. Spengler eindigde eigenlijk als derde, maar werd na afloop van de race schuldig bevonden aan het veroorzaken een onnodig ongeluk. Hij duwde Audi-coureur Timo Scheider in de rondte en kreeg daarvoor een tijdstraf van vijftig seconden.

Daardoor steeg La Rosa als beste Mercedes-coureur naar het podium. Regerend kampioen Bernd Schneider kwam er dit weekend niet aan te pas en moest genoegen nemen met de zevende plek. Nog slechter ging het met voormalig Formule 1-wereldkampioen Mika Hakkinen. De Fin is zijn derde seizoen in de DTM met een tiende plek begonnen.
