Christian Abt over de Norisring

Komend weekend staat de vijfde race van het DTM-seizoen op het programma. Strijdtoneel van de vijfde race is de Norisring. Audi-veteraan Christian Abt is al weer bezig aan zijn achtste seizoen in de toerwagenklasse en reed al vaak genoeg over de Norisring. De 40-jarige Duitser vertelt over het enige stratencircuit op de DTM-kalender.

Abt: De sfeer die daar altijd hangt is erg speciaal. Dit is het Monaco van de DTM. Het heeft dezelfde flair, alleen staan de toeschouwers hier nog dichter op de baan. Het circuit zelf zijn gewoon normale wegen, dus het wegdek verschil veel van dat van reguliere circuits. Ervaring kan hier enorm belangrijk zijn. Dan weet je waar de meeste grip is, waar de meeste rotzooi ligt en nog veel meer van dat soort handige dingen. Naarmate het weekend vordert komt er steeds meer rubber op de baan en dus ook meer grip. Daarom hebben jonge coureurs ook vaak moeite om hier in hun eerste jaar meteen snel te zijn.

De sleutel van dit circuit is dat je elke centimeter optimaal moet benutten. Het minste of geringste foutje kan betekenen dat je een auto afschrijft. Als je op de limiet van de baan rijdt krijg je de daarbij behorende beloning, als je eroverheen gaat straft dit circuit je genadeloos af. Ik heb mooie herinneringen aan deze baan. Al in de Formule 3 ging ik hier goed, vrijwel altijd eindig ik op de Norisring in de top vijf. Mijn rivalen weten in ieder geval dat ze rekening met me moeten houden.
