Bruno Spengler wint op de Norisring

Bruno Spengler heeft zijn eerste zege van het seizoen binnen. De Canadees reed op het stratencircuit van de Norisring vanaf pole position foutloos naar de overwinning. De Mercedes-coureur zag zijn collega bij de Duitse autofabrikant en regerend kampioen Bernd Schneider tweede worden. Mattias Ekstrom hield de eer van Audi hoog en bezette de laatste plek op het podium.

Grootste pechvogel op het korte circuitje was Mika Hakkinen. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 werd hevig benadeeld door een safety car-periode. Net als in de Formule 1 mogen coureurs dan de eerste ronde niet naar binnen, maar Spengler had het geluk dat hij al in de pits was toen de safety car net naar buiten reed. Hakkinen reed dus aan kop zonder een stop gemaakt te hebben en achter hem zaten allemaal rijders te wachten die wel al een keer voor nieuwe banden en brandstof naar binnen waren geweest.

De safety car kwam trouwens naar buiten na een ongeluk van Vanina Ickx. De Belgische werd in de rondte geduwd door Mathias Lauda en knalde in de vangrail. Ze deed in ieder geval langer mee dan Martin Tomczyk. Hij leidde voor de race op de Norisring het kampioenschap, maar de Duitser kon al na één bocht zijn koffers pakken. Hij zakte naar de derde plek in de strijd om de titel.
