Christian Abt houdt het voor gezien

Christijan Abt beëindigt aan het einde van dit jaar zijn lange carrière. De 40-jarige Duitser reed sinds 2000 voor Audi in de DTM, maar hij heeft er genoeg van. Abt behaalde in 74 races 72 punten, maar won geen enkel keer. Voor die eerste overwinning heeft de coureur nog de resterende vijf races van dit seizoen.

Abt over zijn naderende afscheid: De DTM is in mijn ogen de mooiste raceklasse in de wereld. Daarom wilde ik stoppen nu ik nog goed ben en echt meedoe, en niet wachten totdat mensen me achter mijn rug om af zouden schrijven. Het wordt wel een moeilijk afscheid, maar ik kan met opgeheven hoofd terugkijken.

Mijn acht jaren in de DTM was de mooiste periode uit mijn leven. De overwinningen en titel van Laurent Aiello waren voor mij belangrijker dan bijvoorbeeld zelf een keer winnen. Ook met Mattais Ekstrom heb ik een titel binnengehaald. Ik weet dat ik in beide kampioenschappen een rol heb gespeeld en dat is voor mij genoeg. Hopelijk kan ik afscheid nemen met een nieuwe titel voor een Audi-coureur.
