Komend weekend reist het DTM-circus weer af naar Zandvoort. Het CircuitPark in de duinen is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een vaste klant op de kalender van de toerwagenklasse. Audi-coureur Mattias Ekstrom gaat aan de leiding in het kampioenschap. Teamgenote en dochter van de legendarische Jacky Ickx, Vanina Ickx, vertelt over een rondje Zandvoort.

Ik ben een groot fan van Zandvoort. Hier heb ik mijn beste kwalificatieresultaat behaald, samen met Barcelona. Het circuit heeft veel bochten die in een dal vallen, veel snelle bochten ook, blinde heuvels waar je volgas overheen moet, het is net een achtbaan eigenlijk. De omstandigheden veranderen elke seconde vanwege het zand dat over de baan waait.

Wat me de vorige keer verbaasde was de weinige hoeveelheid grip die je naast de racelijn hebt. Als je al met twee wielen naast de ideale lijn reed leek het alsof je met een lekke band rondreed.

Maar het is een enorm snel en uitdagend circuit. Je hebt een groot hart nodig om snel te gaan op Zandvoort. Snelle en blinde bochten maken dat je echt vertrouwen moet hebben in de auto. De omgeving is prachtig met de zee vlak naast het circuit. De race op Zandvoort is een evenement waar iedereen altijd naar uitkijkt, zowel de coureurs als de toeschouwers. De Nederlandse fans zijn helemaal gek van de DTM, aldus Ickx.
