Audi haalt autos uit de strijd na aanvaringen met Mercedes

De op een na laatste race van het seizoen heeft een bizarre ontknoping gehad. Op het circuit van Barcelona besloot Audi om na diverse aanrijdingen van de coureurs met die van concurrent Mercedes alle autos uit de race te halen. Dit besluit overschaduwde de eerste overwinning van Jamie Green volledig. Slechts zes autos, allen van Mercedes, haalden de finish.

Mercedes-rijders Mika Hakkinen en Daniel la Rosa ramden in de race Audi-titelkandidaten Mattias Ekstrom en Martin Tomczyk. Hakkinen en La Rosa hebben ook een straf gekregen voor de volgende race, maar door de uitvalbeurt van het Audi-tweetal en de tweede plek van Bruno Spengler doet Mercedes nu nog volop mee voor de titel.

Motorsportchef van Audi, Wolfgang Ulrich, vertelt: Naar mijn mening moet sport eerlijk zijn en dat is het in dit geval niet. Er gebeurden dingen waarvan wij zeggen dat het niet onze manier van autosport bedrijven is. Na twee discussie met leidinggevende mensen heb ik besloten om ons terug te trekken, want zo willen wij niet racen.
