17-jarige Van Berlo debuteert dit seizoen in ELMS

Kay van Berlo racet komend seizoen in de European Le Mans Series. De 17-jarige Nederlander heeft een éénjarig contract getekend bij het team van EuroInternational. Samen met teamgenoot Ricky Capo zal hij dit jaar een LMP3-bolide van Ligier gaan bemannen.

Na zeven jaar in de karting waagde Van Berlo vorige maand de sprong naar de autosport. En met succes, want de jongeling sloot de Creventic 3x3 uur van Dubai als winnaar in zijn klasse af. Hij lijkt met de ELMS definitief te kiezen voor een carrière in de endurance-racerij.

RTL GP citeert Van Berlo: "We hadden ook een optie voor de eenzitters, maar endurance-racen is veel breder. Ik vroeg me af waar ik het meest ga leren, waar ik de meeste rijtijd krijg en waar ik het beste gevoel bij heb. Zo zijn we hier bij uitgekomen. Bovendien rijden niet veel jonge Nederlandse rijders in deze tak van autosport."

"Van tevoren hadden we het endurance-racen al als optie. Daarom zijn we ook naar Dubai gegaan. Ik wilde ontdekken wat ik van endurance-racen vind, hoe de auto is en hoe ik het ervaar de auto met teamgenoten te moeten delen. Het was moeilijk me daarbij van tevoren een beeld te vormen."

Ambities

Een vergelijking met Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen gaat dan ook niet op en is niet aan Van Berlo besteed. Eerder vertelde hij aan Omroep Brabant al: "De kans om de Formule 1 te bereiken, is enorm klein. Er is altijd een kans, maar je moet het wel reëel bekijken."

Wat zijn de ambities voor komend seizoen? Van Berlo: "Het team gaat voor de titel. We willen dus honderd procent voorbereid beginnen aan het kampioenschap. De meeste circuits waar we op racen zijn Formule 1-circuits, dat maakt het extra mooi."

"Ik wil zo snel mogelijk de ELMS en de 24 uur van Le Mans winnen. Eigenlijk is het een supergrote stap om vanuit de karting naar de ELMS te gaan en dan ook nog bij een team dat potentie heeft om te winnen. Maar als het goed gaat, kun je gewild worden vanwege je leeftijd. Ik denk dat ik één van de jongsten ben die ooit heeft meegedaan aan de ELMS, dus als ik goed presteer, zal dat opvallen."
