Blije Kovalainen is debutant op eerste startrij

De Fin Heikki Kovalainen is ijzersterk hersteld van zijn lichte blessures die hij over heeft gehouden aan zijn heftige crash in de Grand Prix van Spanje. De McLaren-coureur zette zijn beste kwalificatieprestatie van zijn carrière neer in Turkije, en verschalkte daarmee de kampioenschapleider en ook zijn teamgenoot Hamilton.

Kovalainen gaf tijdens de persconferentie dan ook ronduit toe dat hij erg blij was met zijn prestatie op zaterdagmiddag in het Westen van Turkije. Pas afgelopen donderdag kreeg de Fin de permissie van de FIA om te racen in Turkije, hetgeen de prestatie alleen nog maar knapper maakt gezien mentale en fysieke voorbereiding.

Kovalainen, die voor de tweede keer dit seizoen sneller was dan zijn teamgenoot zei: "De afgelopen twee weken zijn behoorlijk chaotisch geweest voor mij, met veel ups-and-downs. Ik ben erg blij dat ik de Grand Prix van Spanje zonder blessures ben uitgekomen. Daarom ben ik ook de medici in Spanje en Finland erg dankbaar."

"Ik wist dat toen ik hier kwam, dat ik de test zou doorstaan op donderdag. Ik ben hierom erg blij en ook de auto voelt dit weekend erg goed. Het geeft me erg veel zelfvertrouwen. Het lijkt er op dat we inderdaad de goede strategie kozen vanmiddag. Mijn ronde in de derde kwalificatiesessie was daarom erg goed en schoon van fouten, het is geweldig om vanaf de eerste startrij te starten", aldus een vrolijke Kovalainen.

Kovalainen meldde nog dat hij wanneer hij zou twijfelen aan zijn fitheid, dat hij in Turkije niet zou rijden. Kovalainen hierover: "Als ik me niet 100 procent goed had gevoeld, dan was ik hier zeker niet naar toegekomen. De afgelopen week heb ik gewoon de normale mentale voorbereiding gehad en tot nu toe gaat alles gewoon erg goed. Morgen wordt het lastig en het is hier bovendien erg gemakkelijk om een fout te maken. Als de wind of de weeromstandigheden veranderen, dan zal het zeker zijn effect hebben."

Heikki Kovalainen staat op dit moment zesde in het wereldkampioenschap Formule 1 voor coureurs met veertien punten, dat er zijn er vier minder dan zijn teamgenoot Hamilton.
