Kovalainen: "Een supergevoel is dit"

Heikki Kovalainen bekroonde zijn contractverlenging met een knappe tweede startpositie direct achter teamgenoot Hamilton. Het betekende voor McLaren een volledige eerste startrij en dat doet Kovalainen deugd. Uiteraard is de voormalig Renault-coureur blij met zijn eigen prestatie.

Heikki Kovalainen over zijn gevoelens direct na de kwalificatie voor de Hongaarse Grand Prix: "Dit is werkelijk waar een supergevoel. Het team is steeds aan het verbeteren, ik ga steeds beter, eigenlijk verbetert alles bij McLaren. Ook dit weekend weer doet het team goede zaken. Op de vrijdag ging het wel redelijk, ook vanochtend was aardig. Maar in de kwalificatie komt het er echt op aan en ik kreeg het voor elkaar. Ik ben tevreden."

Ook Kovalainen gaf in de slotfase van de kwalificatie de voorkeur aan de harde band. De reden hierover is dezelfde die ook Hamilton gaf: "De harde band vind ik fijner om op te rijden in deze warme omstandigheden. Ik ben sneller geweest met deze band vandaag is mijn gevoel."

Kovalainen hoopt morgen op vergelijkbare omstandigheden als vandaag: "Morgen zou het ook gewoon droog en warm moeten zijn. Dreiging van regen is er niet echt. Wellicht zou er vannacht regen kunnen vallen. In ieder geval moeten we morgen opletten dat we niet buiten de ideale lijn gaan rijden, dat zou funest zijn voor onze race. Het is daar erg vies. Daar moeten we morgen echt op letten."

Kovalainen kan een goede klassering morgen goed gebruiken. De coureur is al afgehaakt voor de strijd om de wereldtitel vanwege zijn zesde positie in het klassement. Hij staat liefst dertig punten achter op zijn teamgenoot. De Fin kan morgen wel goede zaken doen als de gedroomde 1-2 overwinning voor McLaren een feit wordt. Hij loopt dan in op de Ferrari en BMW-coureurs.

Ik ga voor de hattrick van Hamilton, maar ergens zie ik misschien Heikki ook wel winnen... Aangezien hij de laatste races redelijk heeft gepresteerd en ook nog eens Lewis een beetj heeft geholpen, zou ook goed zijn voor zijn zelfvertrouwen, en voor de constructeurstitel voor McLaren. Ferrari komt denk ik langzaam op de weg terug, maar een overwinning voor hun... Ik weet het niet.
