Palmer hoopt op Magnussen te verslaan in kwalificatie

Na tien races staat Kevin Magnussen overtuigend voor in het kwalificatieduel met Renault-teamgenoot Jolyon Palmer: 8-2. In Hongarije hoopt de Brit daar verandering in te brengen.

Palmer denkt dat het verschil in ervaring het kwalificatieduel deels bepaald heeft. "Het is waar dat Kevin voor mij staat in het kwalificatieduel, maar het verschil in rondetijden is maar klein. We praten over tiendes en hondersten, maar het valt telkens zijn kant op. Ik zou liegen als ik zou zeggen dat ik niet voor hem wil staan in de kwalificatie, maar misschien lukt het al in Hongarije."

De debutant kijkt uit naar het weekend op de Hungaroring. "Ik hou van Boedapest en ik hou van de omgeving. Daarnaast heb ik een aantal van mijn beste races op het circuit gereden. In de GP2 heb ik daar gewonnen. De natuur van het circuit is anders, doordat er veel langzame en middel-langzame bochten zijn. Het voelt een beetje als Monaco, maar dan zonder de muren."

Doordat het circuit opnieuw geasfalteerd is, zijn er veel vraagtekens volgens Palmer. "Voor mij al helemaal, omdat ik er voor het eerst met een Formule 1-auto ga rijden. Nieuwe asfaltlagen zijn altijd een reis naar het onbekende, want je weet niet hoeveel grip er is, hoe de oppervlakte gaat evolueren over het weekend heen en hoe de banden gaan presteren op het asfalt. Een asfaltlaag verandert niets aan het circuit zelf, maar het geeft een extra punt van focus."

Palmer weegt duidelijk te licht. En vermoed zelfs dat Renault volgend jaar wel met een volledig nieuwe line-up aan de start zal willen komen. Een (bewezen) ervaren kracht en een talentvolle rookie.

Afhankelijk van wat Button doet, wordt de teamleider misschien Button of Massa.
En voor de rookie kijk ik dan Occon of Vandoorne, omdat die vorig jaar ook al de voorkeur had op Magnussen voor Renault, maar niet kon worden losgeweekt bij McLaren.

  Liever Button dan al denk ik dat die naar Williams gaat of bij McLaren blijft.
  Massa verlaat de F1, Magnussen blijft bij Renault en vandoorne mag of naar McLaren of Renault.

Gewogen, veel te licht bevonden en wegwezen door de achterdeur. Ocon, neem maar plaats en ik hoop eigenlijk dat Magnussen ook vervangen wordt.

Tot slot; ik zou Alonso graag zijn loopbaan zien eindigen bij Renault, het team waar hij groot is geworden en de meeste successen mee heeft behaald.
