Gutierrez mist Q3 nipt, Grosjean start na straf als 20e in Duitsland

Het is Haas F1 niet gelukt om in Duitsland het derde deel van de kwalificatie te halen. Esteban Gutierrez zette zichzelf op een elfde startpositie neer en Romain Grosjean kwalificeerde zich als vijftiende, maar de Fransman start na een straf als twintigste.

Gutierrez wilde graag naar Q3 en miste die op een haar na, maar daar was hij niet ontevreden mee. "Ik heb alle mogelijke risico's genomen en heb genoten van de kwalificatie. Ik ben blij met de manier waarop we als team gewerkt hebben en het bewijst dat we als team van vrijdag op zaterdag veel progressie boeken. Dat geeft me veel vertrouwen en ik ben daarom trots op het team. P11 is een prima plaats om te starten en het houdt me hongerig om de volgende keer Q3 wel te bereiken. Morgen geef ik alles van start tot finish om zo in de top tien te finishen."

Grosjean werd in de kwalificatie al verslagen door zijn teamgenoot, maar zal door een versnellingsbakwissel als twintigste starten. "Het is tot nu toe niet ons beste weekend geweest. We hebben problemen gehad en de zaken gingen in de kwalificatie niet zoals gehoopt. De jongens hebben goed werk geleverd om de auto zo snel weer te herstellen na de bakwissel. Ik voelde me een stuk comfortabeler in de auto en ik dacht dat we een goede kans hadden op Q3. Helaas werkte de laatste run in Q2 niet. Ik weet niet wat er gebeurde, maar er was geen grip en het was lastig om de juiste balans te vinden."

Als Gutierrez deze stijgende lijn doorzet is er geen reden om hem te vervangen voor bijvoorbeeld Leclerc.
