Magnussen ziet humor in van brand: "Zo heet had ik het niet verwacht"

Het team van Renault beleefde een hachelijk moment in de openingsfase van de eerste vrije training voor de Grand Prix van Maleisië. Terwijl de monteurs de auto van Kevin Magnussen terug duwden in de garage, vatte de RS16 vlam. Magnussen klom zo snel mogelijk als hij kon uit de auto, maar zijn sessie zat erop. In de tweede training wist Renault Magnussen weer de baan op te krijgen.

Magnussen kan na het incident wel weer lachen: "Ik wist dat het hier heet zo zijn, maar zo heet had ik het nou ook weer niet verwacht. De monteurs verrichtten fantastisch werk door de brand adequaat te blussen en me in de middag weer de baan op te krijgen. Gelukkig konden we in de tweede training de verloren tijd goed komen. We hebben nog wat last van overstuur bij het ingaan van de bochten, maar weten hoe we dat kunnen verbeteren.

In de andere Renault kende Jolyon Palmer een productieve dag. De Brit kon veel rijden en was in de middagsessie goed voor een prima twaalfde tijd: "Aan mijn kant van de garage was het een normale dag. Alles gebeurde bij Kevin Magnussen vandaag. In de ochtendsessie kende ik wat momentjes, maar in de middag ging het al beter. Het was even wennen met het nieuwe asfalt, maar het circuit rijdt nog even leuk als de jaren hiervoor. We kunnen ons voor morgen ook nog verbeteren."

Ach, Magnussen heeft wel voor hetere vuren gestaan. Weinig kunnen rijden maar wie zijn billen brandt moet op de blaren zitten. Hopelijk kan hij in de race wel vlammen.

  Een pak, e.d. houden het 50 seconde vol in extreem vuur. Dit was geen extreem geval. Dat men over de HALO begint is hier niet relevant.

  Hoezo is het hier niet relevant om over de Halo te beginnen? De grootste kritiek op de Halo, buiten het esthetische aspect, is de extra tijd die het de coureur kost om de auto te verlaten. Achteraf gezien was dit geen extreem vuur en had het pak Magnussen lang genoeg beschermt om de auto te verlaten. Maar op het moment dat de brand uitbreekt weet je niet wat er brand, hoe de brand zich ontwikkeld en of er mogelijk explosie gevaar is. Het enige dat je zeker weet is dat de coureur in een voertuig zit dat uit vele zeer brandbare materialen bestaat. Dus wil je dat de coureur het voertuig zo snel mogelijk verlaat.
  
  Als ik terug kijk hoe Magnussen en de monteurs reageerden toen de brand uit brak, krijg ik niet het idee dat ze dachten: "het pak, e.d. houden het 50 seconden vol in extreem vuur en dit brandje is niet extreem." Het kwam op mij meer over als: "de wagen staat in brand, zo snel mogelijk d'r uit."
  
  Het incident van vandaag was een juist een situatie waarin de coureur zo snel mogelijk de auto moest verlaten. Ik geloof niet dat de Halo bij het incident van vandaag voor verwondingen had gezorgd. Maar het was in mijn ogen zeer interessant geweest om te zien hoe snel hij de auto kon verlaten wanneer er echt paniek in de tent was en hij met een Halo reed.

  De tijd om uit een auto met HALO te komen, als het snel moet ligt tussen de 7-9 seconde op het moment. Mercedes en Lewis Hamilton hebben dat onlangs getest. Dit is ook redelijk uitgemeten geweest in de media/social media. Dus is het niet relevant. Het is pas relevant, als die auto op zijn kop had gelegen met HALO, en dan met een brandje. Dan had ik wel willen zien hoe snel een coureur uit een auto komt.
